Accessibility in Ballooning: Can Everyone Fly?
Hot air ballooning is one of the most peaceful and inclusive ways to experience Melbourne or the Yarra Valley from above.
Many people are surprised to learn that most guests can enjoy a flight, including families, seniors, and first-time flyers.
However, there are a few important details to understand about accessibility and physical requirements.
1. Who Can Fly
Almost anyone in good general health can join a hot air balloon flight.
Ballooning does not involve sudden movement or physical strain, and passengers simply stand comfortably for the duration of the flight.
Children aged six years and older are welcome to fly, as long as they can see over the basket, which is about 120 centimetres high.
There is no upper age limit, and many of our guests are well into their seventies or eighties.
2. Standing and Mobility Requirements
Passengers should have enough mobility to move with light assistance when boarding or exiting the basket.
Our crew provides help using a small step stool and steady support when you climb in or out.
You do not need to jump or lift yourself high, but you should be able to follow the crew’s guidance and step safely with assistance.
During the flight, passengers must be able to:
Stand unassisted for about one hour.
Bend their knees slightly for landing.
These abilities ensure both comfort and safety throughout the experience.
3. Pregnant Passengers
For safety reasons, passengers who are pregnant cannot fly.
Although landings are gentle, there may be a slight bump or tilt that could pose a risk.
We recommend waiting until after pregnancy to enjoy the experience.
4. Guests with Limited Mobility
We understand that every guest’s needs are different.
If you have limited mobility, please contact our team before booking.
We will explain what to expect and help you decide whether a flight is suitable.
Most balloons in Australia require passengers to climb over the side of the basket with crew assistance.
Our staff are trained to provide patient, respectful help at the launch and landing sites.
5. Hearing or Vision Impairment
Passengers with hearing or vision impairment are welcome to fly with a companion or support person.
Our crew can adjust the pre-flight briefing using written notes or clear gestures when needed.
If you need specific assistance, let us know in advance so we can make your experience as smooth as possible.
6. Medical Conditions
If you have a medical condition affecting balance, heart rate, or mobility, please speak with your doctor before booking.
Ballooning is calm and low impact, but safety always comes first.
7. Support Companions and Carers
Carers and companions are encouraged to join the flight to assist during boarding and landing.
If a companion prefers to stay on the ground, our crew can arrange for them to follow the balloon by vehicle and meet at the landing site for photos and breakfast.
8. Our Commitment
We aim to make ballooning welcoming and accessible for as many guests as possible.
From booking assistance to landing, our team provides clear guidance, patient help, and a safe, supportive environment for all passengers.
If you have any questions about accessibility, contact us before booking.
We are happy to help you plan the best experience for your comfort and safety.
